Is it?

Is it strange that I'm a few days short of being 20 and I still wonder what I will look like when I grow up?

How weird is it to think that, one day, I might be a published author since I want to pursue a PhD. I wonder what I will call it...

Is it okay that I find cleaning my room a legitimate de-stresser and study break?

Is it alright to get teary-eyed when looking at pictures of your favorite places that you miss?

Is it wrong to plan out and pre-write a journal so that whoever finds it in the future will think I am excellent at grammar and extremely creative?

Okay, I think the last one is kind of cheating myself.

Everyone has their quirks, right? Right? I find out in two days if I am excepted into the year-long study abroad program for the University of Bordeaux in France. With all this anticipation and hopefulness I keep analyzing myself and wondering if the French will find me bizarre from all my quirks.

What are your quirks or unique ways of going about life?

Some things I learned this week

In my Primate behavior class we're learning about the major life history patterns in each stage of life. My professor, Adrienne Zhilman, compared elephants to primates for an example of adaptation in times of desperation. Apparently during the ivory poaching times, all the adults in a certain elephant social group had died out due to human activity. Since juveniles and infants don't have tusks yet and therefore were not hunted, they were the only ones left in this social group. Now elephants do not become adults and begin to reproduce until they are around 14 years of age. However, in this case, the only female juvenile in the group was 5 years old and, in order for her species to survive, she became pregnant at 5! I think that is so fascinating. Nature, in general is fascinating. These young elephants changed their natural life patterns in order to survive. There were consequences to this event however. Since there were no adults around to teach the young and pass down traditions, the young elephants did not learn the correct foods to eat and social queues. Some of the juvenile males had to be "put down" since they were fighting and causing immense disruption on the reservation.

In addition to the fact that they changed the natural life pattern, I find the importance of parents in their children's lives very interesting. I'm trying to imagine how my life would have turned out if I had grown up in isolation or only with other children. In both of these imagined cases I would probably be a social pariah if I eventually entered into regular society. There is a famous case where a girl was locked in a room for a majority of her life by her parents. When authorities discovered the isolated girl and brought her into society she did not know the proper way to interact with people and didn't even know how to talk. Heres a video about it:

This case, as well as the elephant one, shows how important social interaction is to survival. Social interaction provides the guidelines to survive along side others. Why even live with others, you ask? Because groups provide protection from predators, mates for reproduction and survival of the species, others to share food with, and teachers to know how & where to get the right foods. We constantly need social groups in every generation to pass down information to the next and contribute to survival of our species: humans. Its all so fascinating. I love anthropology :)

The Weekend in Review

I've been out and about lately so I haven't been around the computer to update this blog thing I've got going here. Time to catch up:

Friday
My first day of my internship started this Friday. An internship is required for my Transformative Action class so I decided to find one that involved sustainable gardening since it has been something I have been interested in for a while. The internship is at a community demonstration garden called Terra Gnomea, three houses away from the beach. It is a hidden little gem in Santa Cruz that makes a great difference in the community.

A hen from the garden's chicken coup. They ate flowers from my hand!
"Terra Kitty", the garden's cute cat!

The garden has a green house, a chicken coop, a bee hive, a barn, and multiple garden beds! Everything is built from recycled materials and they compost everything! During my internship, we plan to build a "gray water" pond which is a way to filter and recycle water for use in the garden. We will be learning about seasonal plants and vegetables, how certain plants balance others' chemicals out, the importance of local plants and more! I am so excited to be learning about something new! The internship will be from 1-5 PM every Friday, but the first half hour will consist of a meal made with food from the garden!

We had rosemary potatoes; a salad with apples, blueberries, red bell pepper, and red onions; and a Moroccan chickpea dish with tomatoes, onions, and spices! It was all so delicious and vegan!

Saturday
My saturday consisted of running errands while Kevin tagged along. I bought a Groupon for American Apparel that would expire soon and I needed to redeem it, so I did. From the store, I purchased some amazing "winter leggings" that I highly recommend for the colder months. They are so thick and comfortable and would be perfect with boots and a dress or even as sweat pants!

Kevin and I stopped for  lunch at my favorite Santa Cruz cafe, CafĂ© Delmarette. All of their ingredients are organic and locally grown so their business is great for the environment and the community. They make the absolute best scones in existence and I am in love with every sandwich they make. On Saturday I went there specifically for a certain grilled eggplant sandwich but it turns out that eggplant is out of season so I settled for a grilled chicken sandwich with sun-dried tomatoes, onions, mozzarella, and garlic aioli. Delicious!

Saturday Night
Kevin and I have felt like we have been spending too much money lately so we decided to find a cheap way to do dinner. So we decided to have a picnic! We made ourselves some sandwiches, packed some apples, apple sauce, and peanuts then walked a mile and a half to the beach to dine!

Sunday
Today I went to the Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival! I went with Laurel, Bryan, Marc, Ashley, and Sean! It was so crowded that it isn't surprising that we ran into all of our bosses and many friends at the event. What is surprising though is that 10 chocolate tastings was too many! I paid for the 10 ticket thinking I would still want more, but by 3 tastes I was on chocolate overload! I collected the rest of my "tastings" to take home for my housemates to devour. It was a little difficult to take pictures there since it was packed and my hands were full of chocolate.

Characters: Alexander & My Theory

There are all sorts of people on a college campus: people from diverse backgrounds with varying life experiences who express themselves in different way. I love all the characters I come across on a daily basis here at school. For example there is my incredibly unique friend, Alexander.

Alexander (who will never answer to the name Alex) is the most fascinating person I have ever met. I have never met anyone like him and I don't expect I ever will meet someone similar. He has this vigor for life and makes everyday a work of art whether it be visual, musical (his specialty), or a performance piece. It seems as though he sees everyday as a special occasion which requires dress clothes and perfect manners. Rare is the day you see him in a regular t-shirt or, heaven-forbid, tennis shoes in place of his regular dress shirts, vests, colored velvet pants, and dress shoes. He carries around a plastic penguin who wears a bow-tie. This penguin has been dubbed Washington and it seems like everyone on campus knows who Washington is even if they don't know Alexander! People greet Washington, ask how he's doing, and sometimes people babysit Washington for a weekend. Everyone acts like this interaction with a plastic penguin is normal because, I feel, Alexander unintentionally creates a space around him where it is safe to act outside of the box. This safe space is by-far Alexander's greatest work of art.
The reason I bring Alexander up is because today he played the harpsichord for me. My friend is a music major and a known, very talented composer. However, it wasn't until today that I heard him play it. He began by telling me all about the beautiful instrument and the different versions of it. Then, he excitedly had me sit in front of it and listen to the different sounds it made on its double keyboard by adjusting little levers. It is amazing how a simple shift in the position of strings can entirely change the sound of an instrument. Finally, he began to play. The sound that his fingers made was Alexander in musical form. The specialized sound of the harpsichord is Alexander. The classic and historical vibe of the notes yet the ability to be peppy, dark, and magical is Alexander. Hearing him play was almost surreal, I could see him as the music. I don't know how to explain it but it happened.
All of this combined with his immense passion for music makes me love him so much. I am incredibly thankful to have him in my life and also, that he is in the world, existing for those who need his inspiration.

I guess I started on the topic of characters on a college campus...

Another type of person that exists on college campuses is the kind that wants a reaction out of people. People like this surely do exist but I have a theoretical one in mind. Today on campus there was violent threat that four random people would be killed. I know this because the administration found graffiti in a bathroom that said it was going to happen today, January 18th. Of course, to be safe, all the people at the top of the power pyramid which is the university have been taking precautions by upping security, sending out emails, and allowing professors to cancel class. Well the day is almost over and, thankfully, nobody was killed. Since receiving information about the graffiti and threat some weeks ago, I've been convinced that it was all a hoax. My theory, since it was found in a social sciences building, is that it was written by a psychology professor or grad student who wanted to study the effects of fear and such. Yes, this is a horrible thing to do, but it would be an interesting way of conducting research. But it could also be a student who didn't want to go to class that day or someone who was disturbed and was really thinking about going through with it. I guess what I want to say is that there are people on college campuses who can do some dumb and illogical things. A person can be book-smart enough to get into college but lack some common sense. Of corse I say this with the type of person who would do this to get a reaction in mind.

Characters really make the world interesting. I'm glad we have some diversity in this world but just wish there weren't so many threats.

Pizza and pasta night!

Tonight after our zip-lining adventure Kevin and I went to Kianti's pizza and pasta restaurant for dinner. We love Kianti's and highly recommend it any time you might be in Santa Cruz!

AMAZING cheesy garlic bread!

Kevin's grilled chicken and bacon pizza.

Kianti's Gormet Pasta: Sun-dried tomatos, bacon, artichoke hearts, and creamy pesto!

Ice Cream Date!

Saturday night became an ice cream night at Mission Hill Creamery! All the ice cream is hand-made from local organic products which makes me feel less guilty about eating it. All the flavors I sampled were absolutely delicious!

After tasting 6 flavors I decided on salted caramel and Kevin chose peanut butter-chocolate. But next time I hope to get their grapefruit sorbet!

Zip Lining in the Red Woods!

Today, Kevin and I used our Groupons for Mount Hermon Canopy Tours in the redwoods of Santa Cruz! I was afraid, at first, but it ended up being a wonderful daytime adventure! We were up 150 in the trees on little platforms with no railings, so terrifying!

Photo Scavenger Hunt Date!

When Saturday's zip-lining plan fell through my boyfriend, Kevin, and I decided to go on a little adventure around our city, Santa Cruz!

We began our adventure at Taqueria Vallarta for some delicious tacos.
While we were there, we made a Scavenger Hunt list of things we wanted to take pictures with.

So our pictures with the items on the list didn't turn out well but we took plenty of other photos.

We saw many victorian style houses that were so cute!

This sculpture is a Vietnam memorial called "Collateral Damage".
Kevin did a research report on it last year and the story behind it is pretty intense!

We found these stairs and they were just asking to be climbed!

At the top we found the Santa Cruz Mission!
It was really interesting because I'm taking an archaeology class this quarter and the mission is an archaeological site.

An avocado tree that is 98 years old! Mmm avo!

This day was so fantastic! It really was an adventure! I loved how much fun could be had by exploring the town on foot. You have one expectation then find so many other exciting things! I think more scavenger hunt dates are in our future but next time we'll take better pictures :)

The sun is out today!

Time to play!

I'm hoping to go zip-lining today but if that doesn't work out I'll find something to do in the sun! The winter cloudiness and darkness really gets me down sometimes. I love being bundled up in coats and mittens but sometimes, I really need that sun and warm weather to be cheerful.

What do you do to keep you're spirits up during the somewhat sunless season?

Its a Seussical musical, but not the one you're thinking of

Did you know that Dr. Seuss made a movie musical in 1953?

Turns out "5000 Fingers of Dr. T", as it is called, was a flop in the box office but theres a small cult following now. I want to see it!

Here are some clips:

It looks faaantastic :) If anyone knows of a place where I can find this movie, let me know!

And so it begins...

I've wanted to start a blog for awhile now but I don't have a dog, a baby, a husband, a home of my own, a career, a hobby, or a crazy life. That seems to be what most blogs I read are about. That, or crafts. Anyways, I decided to start this and see what it evolves into. I'm excited!

Actually, I'm excited for so much! I'm a young college student and I have so much to learn and look forward to! To me, life is wonderful and I want to see and experience all that there is!

I want to understand, feel, explore, create, and eat!
And thats exactly what I am going to do.
